The post about the Pakistan Consul General in New York visiting a U.S. organization in New York (NASDAQ, not the New York Stock Exchange) is incorrect in its facts. It is also written by an illiterate person, who can neither spell the words correctly nor construct a simple English sentence, but has the brains and daring of a loud and impertinent crow. The occasion of the Consul General’s visit was important in voicing the needs of the Pakistani flood-affected people, which he did most effectively, according to the format of the U.S. host organization. The timings and the photographs were not the Consulate’s choice. The Consul General’s words, which he spoke on Pakistan’s behalf, and which I have had the chance to hear from a recording (available in the NASDAQ archives), were indeed a rare opportunity and an expression utilized most appropriately by the Consul General on behalf of the Pakistani people. His appeal on behalf of Pakistan was well appreciaed by his U.S. audience. If you know of the Pakistani general image in the area, you should be grateful as a Pakistani to the current Consul General–for having transformed Times Square for Pakistan within one day.
You must check your facts before you write anything, and you must learn to recognize your real friends (at least some Pakistani officers) who are selflessly working for Pakistan and its people. Also, to earn credibility for any website, we must work within an ethical code of communication and avoid use of uncivilized language. You should seriously consider apologizing to your audience for posting a totally incorrect and misleading report. It may also be in the fitness of things to thank the Consul General of Pakistan in New York to take Pakistan’s case for help to forums where it is often difficult to have a proper hearing. If you can not do this, you will never have access to a well-educated audience, regardless of the abuse of new technology evident here. You are also likely to be deprived of whatever quantity of genuine sympathy and caring still exists for Pakistan and its good people. Therefore, responsible blogging behaviour is extremely important, and is hereby urgently advised for this website and fellow members posting here.
@Chief Scientist: This is an open forum for all Pakistanis and if you think the credibility of this post is questionable regardless of entire Pakistani media is reporting the same, then you must post a link of his speech along with other supporting evidence. By the way how much did he collect and can you tell me what would have more impact, images of flood victims or an official in suit and tie? As admin I assure you that nothing here posted for personal agenda and I am sure you will know that if you watch some of the posts here.
Kind Regards

@chiefscientst please for heaven sake tell us that why u guys displayed ur pics ? I saw this news on Geo and it is in all newspapers also . please tell us why?
@Chief Scientist:
Sir, can you please provide a link where we can view/hear or read the CG’s speech? Who’s responsibility was it exactly of deciding what to put on the screen and for what duration?
Babar Hashmi is really ollo the patha.
I have noticed a number of comments here following my comment concerning the NASDAQ event in New York. I am writing here again because I respect the members’ curiosity in search of facts. It has taken more than a day’s work to do some digging and verification. I should also make it clear that I have no connection with the Pakistani government or its functionaries, and no interest in inter-state matters. I write here because I have Pakistan’s and Pakistanis’ best interest at heart, part of which requires that they be told the truth. So here are the bare facts of the matter; everything else stated about the event by anybody is false.
The Consul General of Pakistan in New York was invited as the Chief Guest at the market closing of day ceremony of NASDAQ, which normally involves exchange of a few pleasant words between a couple of persons at the rostrum and the ringing of the Closing Bell by one of them. It is all over in a few minutes at the headquarters in New York, while being flashed (without audio) on the NASDAQ screen in Times Square and, simultaneously, webcast/broadcast all over the world.
It is not a hall with physical market entities present, but rather a nerve centre connected to all major markets the world over, in our great information and virtual economy: words, images, and figures, but no cash. The last-named you may realize and collect later anywhere in the world. Surely, the markets will open the following day again, with the Opening Bell.
The Honorable Consul General of Pakistan, Mr. A. S. Babar Hashmi, accepted the NASDAQ invitation, through the Commercial Section of the Consulate, if NASDAQ could display on their screen a video clip concerning the floods in Pakistan, and if, without standing on ceremony, he could also make a statement about the plight of the flood-stricken Pakistani people and their needs. As NASDAQ agreed to this request, Mr. Babar Hashmi attended the Closing Bell ringing ceremony together with the Commercial Counsellor, Mr. Muhammad Aamer, on 25th August. They both appeared in local dress along with the NASDAQ officials. Indeed, the pics and all photography or text to be flashed, as ever, are and were NASDAQ decisions finally.
The substantive event was of 15-20 minute duration. The 3-minute video clip about the floods in Pakistan offered to NASDAQ by the Consulate was not accepted as NASDAQ
display rules disallow any clips longer than 30 seconds. The Consul General, who was the Chief Guest, was requested to keep his statement/appeal under 2 minutes, which he did, before ringing the Closing Bell. His appeal was beamed on the NASDAQ Tower while he spoke inside the studios, and it was webcast/broadcast on all major international networks. The NASDAQ host and chair was very supportive of this message in his own statement (of 2 minutes), and NASDAQ is considering running a short video clip or other flood images provided by the Consulate on another suitable day, as long as these fall within the host organization’s guidelines.
The video link for the Consul General’s statement is at the NASDAQ website:
< http://mktvideo.nasdaq.com/MarketSiteOpenCloseVideos/201008/mc_082510.wmv >
Anybody can see for himself or herself how correct, transparent, sympathetic, friendly, and helpful this whole event has been, and how it may actually lead to much help for Pakistanis.
Let us be clear. The Consulate General did not pay anything for it. As per tradition at NASDAQ, only those present are shown. Any long statements or video clips (and over 2 minutes is long) are add-ons, concessions, special and rare considerations. Here Pakistan was honored, right in the spot where only a few months ago, in Times Square, Pakistan’s good name was tarnished by unscrupulous elements (booked as mass murderers in New York and condemned by all sane people in Pakistan).
It will be appreciated if admin of this website keeps it as an open forum, and if the freedom of expression does not exclude responsible, well-founded, and reasonable writing and abuse-free speech that speaks to the truth.
Everybody should be clear about the following:
1. there was no offer of one-hour screen time; only a quarter of an hour was scheduled for screening purposes for the entire public programme;
2. Pakistani diplomats appeared at the event following appropriate local dress code;
3. a lot of sympathy for Pakistan was generated by the Consulate’s effort in New York headquarters of NASDAQ, with the likelihood of donations following;
4. any fudging of these bare details in sections of the Pakistani press is the work of various agencies, their minions, and other vested interests who are no friends of the Pakistani people; their disinformation, through planting of fake stories in chunks of the print and electronic media, is aimed at setting one Pakistani up against another so as to eventually destroy Pakistan, beginning with credibility issues and manipulation of its press and other media channels to control public opinion; websites such as yours can possibly help correct this menace, but only if some of us refuse to become part of this evil agenda being perpetrated on Pakistanis; otherwise, everything will turn out to be jootaykhao.com.
5. well-educated people in Pakistan, particularly, have to watch out for copycat media and partisan conglomerates aligned to one trickster or another;
6. while we are able to find fault with so much, let us not lose the ability to recognize those among us in all walks of life who are truly serving Pakistan and its people without much gain to themselves, and let us give them a helping hand if we can.
Finally, closely related to this matter of attitude, hasty declarations, and indifferent self-examination is a question that we all ask without finding a fully satisfying answer, and it pertains to the general malaise. A young journalist has asked that same question, rather succinctly, in his recent article in Foreign Policy (August 19, 2010): “Why Doesn’t the World Care About Pakistanis?” http://www.foreignpolicy.com/articles/2010/08/19/why_doesnt_the_world_care_about_pakistanis?page=full
The author of the article, Mosharraf Zaidi, asks in his article the particular question about Pakistan and Pakistanis that is being asked by many thoughtful persons nearly everywhere: “Why has the most devastating natural disaster in recent memory generated such a tepid response from the international community?” The answer he provides to his own question should make every Pakistani sit up and listen carefully (without shouting): “the main reason that Pakistan isn’t receiving attention or aid proportionate to the devastation caused by these floods is because, well, it’s Pakistan…. in this case, the humanity of Pakistan’s victims takes a backseat to the preconceived image that Westerners have of Pakistan as a country.” Mr. Zaidi concludes his article with a critical question for everybody: “How can I help?”
It is the same Moharraf Zaidi who, surprised by the positive attention given Pakistan recently at Times Square, asks in a tweet/blog: “Who can tell me more about Babar Hashmi and what he pulled at the NASDAQ screen at Times Square?” (about 17 hours ago via TweetDeck http://twitter.com/mosharrafzaidi )
Hon. A. S. Babar Hashmi, the Consul General of Pakistan in New York, was helping Pakistan the way only a diplomat of his ability and standing in the international community could. We should be happy to have such people representing our interests in the world. Pakistan’s Consul General in New York is a conscientious person. You and the writer of your post with baseless stories and slander owe your members and your audience an unqualified apology and immediate retraction.
It may also be useful to look up the relevant news items in Pakistani newspapers: (August 26, 2010), (August 27, 2010), and
(August 28, 2010).
The link I provided for the Consul General’s statement at NASDAQ, New York, has somehow gone missing from the text posted just a while ago. The video link at the NASDAQ website is http://mktvideo.nasdaq.com/MarketSiteOpenCloseVideos/201008/mc_082510.wmv
It may also be useful to look up the relevant news items in Pakistani newspapers: Business Recorder (August 26, 2010), Daily Times(August 27, 2010), and Pakistan Observer(August 28, 2010).
This fuckin asshole should be terminated from his job. HE is living it up in nyc while people in pakistan are dyin in these floods. Fuckin ullu ka patha
lol iss banday ki tc hi nahi khatam ho rahi^^^. As for Mr Babar Hashmi, people like him are the scum of the earth. Unfortunately for us, we voted these fucks in and we have to live with it now.
Hmm! So GeoTV was taking some kind of revenge when it broadcast the negative news about Baber Hashmi. I know they belong to a different political group but doing this kind of dishonest video-casting by Geo is shameful. Watching NASDAQ video it looks like every thing went by the protocol and Hashmi did his job well.
Sorry for the delay in replying to this story but it only came to my attention today. I am surprised that after offering to help pakistan’s flood appeal, a break from it traditional policies, NASDAQ then decided that the clips offered were “too long” to broadcast. Were these criteria’s not mentioned before hand to the pakistani consulate? Was there no communication as to the set rules and regulations. I am not clear about what chief scientist is trying to say here. I get that NASDAQ had decided to break with tradition and offer a helping hand in making a direct appeal to not only NY but to the world but seriously did they then decide that only certain images should be beamed on the screen, did NASDAQ seriously think that the images of high ranking civil servants would melt the hearts of skeptics more than images of flood stricken victims? If so then it seems that someone has twisted the arm of NASDAQ so that they are seen to be “helping”.
Why couldn’t the appeal made by Angelina Jolie be edited and used instead? I have no doubt that the civil servants wanted to genuinely help pakistan flood victims but I am astounded, chief scientist, that for presumably “educated” people no communication seems to have taken place to clarify and ascertain the guidelines. What a wasted opportunity and again what a shame for the losers are the flood victims AGAIN!
Farah and IDRecall have good comments. The facts as checked from NASDAQ records speak for themselves. The program finalised by NASDAQ gave the Consul General 2 minutes of speaking time. It also gave 2 minutes of speaking time to the Vice Chairman of NASDAQ to issue a statement supporting the Consul General’s appeal for help to flood victims. The rest of the time was given to Closing Bell Ceremony, for which the Consul General was invited in the first place.
As for the images shown, only those present in the studios, were shown (according to the NASDAQ tradition), and the text of the Consul General’s message was beamed on the screen within this short time. The records show that the Consulate had some prior correspondence with NASDAQ about running a flood video and images during the Pakistani diplomats’ visit. NASDAQ was offered a 3 minutes video of the flood affected people in Pakistan to run on the occasion, but NASDAQ declined to run it for some technical reasons and instead wanted a 30 second (thirty seconds) video with such content. This information arrived on the day of the diplomats’ visit to NASDAQ. There was no time for alternative arrangements. So an appeal for assistance was made by the Consul General with the Pakistan flag in the background. The message got through everywhere. To be sure, NASDAQ was not a collection place. It was an important forum, where a ceremonial occasion was succesfully used by Pakistan’s diplomats to their country’s great advantage. I believe donations have followed the appeal and are being sent to Pakistan. The flood victims are likely to gain (not lose)from this effort if the donations resulting from this effort reach them.
We have to be careful about recognizing our genuine friends and others, those who are devoted this country’s service in very bad circumstances and truly care for Pakistani people’s well-being in spite of ill-informed and negative media campaigns. Obviously, all among our ranks are not the same! Let us not blame anybody without a reason. At least these diplomats did for Pakistan more than the occasion normally allows. They also re-opened the doors of Times Square for Pakistanis and placed again the Pakistan flag there at a place of honor, where after the likes of Faisal Shehzad, any Pakistani had become a forbidden commodity. Some sections of Pakistani media is obviously twisting everything for its own ends, at the master’s orders, and misinforming the Pakistani people. Only Pakistan’s good and reasonable people, its truth-seeking people, will actually help Pakistan and Pakistanis.
A couple more things, Farah. I am not in a position to comment on NASDAQ policy or format. In all fairness, they honored Pakistan and they were honored by the visit of our top diplomat in New York. Within the NASDAQ format and scheduled time, our diplomatic team did their job extremely well. The Consul General’s assistance appeal from NASDAQ was the first major appeal. It was followed by the appeal launched by Angelina Jolie several days later.
All the Councillars & Ambassadors posted in foreign countries, they are all bastad, because either they are sitting in their airconditioned rooms are enjoying life outside the Embassy and due to their negligence all the Pakistanis specially who are holding Pakistani passports suffers very badly. They are humiliated by the Embassy staff.Our idiot Councillars & Ambassadors are living in the most expensive areas of the city, where as the Embassies exists in such a dirty place where one can prefer to go to some “wash room”. The attitude of the Embassy staff is disgusting & insulting, every day unpleasent evnts happened in the Embassy
I’m partly surprised and partly shock … reason being, I’m unable to recognize who’s propagating – the so-called-politicians or the so-called-media???
The official NASDAQ page on facebook gives no clue about the offer to help or about sponsored one-hour screen and the articles by journalists over losing a good opportunity don’t hold any credibility either. I’m befuddled!
This is all false reporting and Pakistani media is cooking up lies. I did my own research and found the following:
Mr. Babar was an invited guest and was given an agenda. Invited guests like Mr Babar are giving 2 minutes to convey their message and as you can see from the video he conveyed all that he wanted to very effectively.

I just went to the mentioned sites and came across this at the end of the page (http://www.nasdaq.com/marketsite/closing_bell/event.html)
‘Promotions
Companies may choose to do a larger promotion (i.e. give-away to Times Square visitors or on site broadcast press, product sampling or fashion show) in conjunction with their Closing Bell. If you are interested in incorporating a promotion into the morning festivities please contact Jennifer Ok who will provide guidance on past promotional events, what promotions may require a permit, etc.’
This means that Babar Hashmi had the chance & opportunity to present the effects of floods on people but he preferred not to. Am i correct?
There are many awareness gaps that Pakistanis must fight. The “promotions” and “larger promotions” mentioned are outside the standard NASDAQ ceremonies, and these have to be purchased. The Consul General of Pakistan attended, as Chief Guest, a standard ceremoney (“The Closing Bell”) and made excellent use of his limited time for his country, speaking for two minutes for Pakistan’s flood-affected. As the Consul General had informed NASDAQ about his theme, it drew a message of support (again two minutes) from NASDAQ Vice Chairman. This is more than one can expect in a standard (not paid for by Pakistan)ceremony.
Mohammad Fateh’s post of 14 September is helpful to understand exact program of the event and it shows that NASDAQ had only some speaking time for the Pakistani diplomat, but no video or images of Pakistan (except the Pakistan flag)were scheduled by the hosts. The Press Release issued on 13 September, 2010 by the Consulate General, New York clarifies everything: http://pakistanconsulateny.org/PDF/PRESS_RELEASE.PDF
Obviously, the Consulate General was not going to BUY advertzing time for a promotion. It was a NASDAQ program made by NASDAQ. Babar Hashmi made an honourable Chief Guest for NASDAQ ceremony and at the same time conveyed his message to all to help Pakistan. But Pakistanis also have to learn some respect for their honorable people who are working hard for them in thankless jobs.
The Consulate’s Press Release is given below (for everybody’s convenience).
PRESS RELEASE
“The Consulate General of Pakistan, New York has already briefed members of the media about the factual position regarding the launching of an appeal for assistance to Pakistan flood victims at the NASDAQ Stock Exchange on 25th August, 2010. The Foreign Office spokesman in Islamabad has contradicted the malicious propaganda reports already. However, unfortunately, even three weeks after that event, inaccurate, defamatory, twisted, and extremely misleading material about the Consulate and its officials has been circulated through Pakistani media. This Press Release by the Consulate General should set the record straight once and for all.
“Let it be understood clearly that the Consulate did not participate in any New York Stock Exchange event. It participated in a NASDAQ OMX event, which was not offered as a forum for Pakistan-related issues but only to ring the closing bell of the market day, a routine ceremonial occasion. Its duration was not one hour screen or air time. Pakistani diplomats were not photographed there for any personal gain but were part of the NASDAQ official live webcast routine program of the day which was about 15 minutes long. As coordinated by the Consulate’s Commercial Section, the Consul General accepted the invitation on his condition that he could launch a Pakistan Help appeal for flood affectees before concluding the NASDAQ official ceremony. Eventually, he did precisely that. The NASDAQ video record of the event in their official archives (link given below) shows the actual event and its total duration besides the contents:
http://mktvideo.nasdaq.com/MarketSiteOpenCloseVideos/201008/mc_082510.wmv
“NASDAQ official video record shows that the event was conducted as usual by NASDAQ and Pakistani diplomats represented Pakistan as the occasion required. Although only the guests of the day are normally shown on their media screen, the Consulate General had made a special request to screen a 3-minute video showing the flood situation in Pakistan , but the video clip offered by the Consulate was declined by NASDAQ. The NASDAQ forum is not a collection point, but Consul General Hashmi took the occasion, for 2 minutes as programmed by the hosts, to make a statement for the flood-affected people in Pakistan and he drew the world’s attention to this challenge. A supporting statement of 2 minutes was also read by the Vice Chair of NASDAQ. Thus it should be evident that in certain cases, the nature, contents, duration, and shape of the entire programme have been misreported by some media channels.
“Several media channels, however, have shown considerable professional responsibility in keeping the Pakistani people properly informed. Regardless of examples of erroneous and tendentious reporting of its normal activities, the Consulate General of Pakistan in New York will continue with its efforts to seek donations for the Prime Minister’s Flood Relief Fund 2010. It will also continue to serve Pakistanis and safeguard Pakistan ’s interest within its jurisdiction at every suitable forum and in every appropriate way.
